Our Functions

The Permanent Representation is responsible at the embassy, for all matters concerning the agricultural sector (crops including cocoa, livestock, fisheries and forestry) and related sectors (e.g. agricultural engineering, irrigation, food safety and agribusiness). In carrying out its functions, the Permanent Representation focuses its work mainly on the three Rome-based United Nations (U.N.) food and agriculture agencies, namely the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) – (www.fao.org), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) – (www.ifad.org) and the World Food Programme (WFP) – (www.wfp.org).

It serves as the liaison between the Government of Ghana and the U.N. agencies with the aim of fostering effective collaboration for the development and modernization of Ghana's agricultural sector and rural economy.

The Permanent Representation thus ensures Ghana's participation in sessions of the Governing Bodies of the three UN agencies and other high-level technical meetings in order to keep the country abreast with global issues and policies in the agricultural sector. It facilitates the development of project proposals for technical and financial support to Ghana by the U.N. agencies and performs other duties that have the potential for enhancing the development of Ghana's agricultural sector, e.g. interacting with investors and facilitating their access to relevant information and contacts in Ghana.

In line with its functions, the Permanent Representation receives delegations from Ghana attending sessions of the Governing Bodies of the three U.N. agencies and facilitates their work in Rome.
